Stop the Brunswick County Home Tax

Our county leaders have placed a real estate transfer tax, also known as the "home tax", on the November 6th ballot in an effort to increase government spending. This proposed home tax is a bad idea and will tax your nest egg and your success.

This new tax isn’t needed! It will increase the cost of homeownership and adversely affect our county’s working families and senior citizens.

Q. What is a transfer tax (also called the home tax)?

A. It is a real property transfer tax you will pay anytime you sell your home, your land or your business.

Q. Is this tax paid one time?

A. No, the tax is paid any time real property is exchanged, and is in addition to the property taxes you pay every year to the county.

Q. Are there any exceptions if I have to sell my property because of financial problems caused by a job loss or a death in the family?

A. No, everyone who sells their property will pay this tax. Senior citizens downsizing will have to pay a tax for the privilege of selling their home. Churches and other important civic and non-profit organizations will also have to pay this tax. Farmers interested in selling land to their children will have to pay this tax. Military families who are transferred to another community and sell their home as a result will have to pay this tax.

Q. Would this tax ever expire?

A. No, if passed by the voters in November, the county could levy this tax permanently.

Q. Isn’t this a tax on growth?

A. No, this is not a tax on growth, nor is it a tax on newcomers coming to the area and buying property. This tax is paid by the seller — people who have lived here for years and paid property taxes, sales taxes and other fees and taxes.

Q. Will this tax help make housing more affordable?

A. No, the home tax will make housing less affordable. Young families already are struggling to afford a home. This new tax means many people will no longer be able to experience the dream of homeownership. Mortgage credit opportunities are severely pinched right now and foreclosures are at record levels — this is the wrong time to place any additional tax on homeownership.

Q. Wouldn’t this tax keep property taxes from rising?

A. No, the transfer tax is an unreliable source of revenue — one subject to the ups and downs of the real estate market. Furthermore, our county commissioners can’t guarantee that your property taxes will not continue to rise — even with a new home tax.

On November 6th, Vote AGAINST the Home Tax.
